Y: The Last Man
Vol 5: Ring Of Truth
Brian K. Vaughan, Pia Guerra & Jose Marzan Jr.
I’m gonna warn you up front, there’s a ninja in this book. If that sounds kinda stupid well…yeah it is. If there was any feeling of the real world still gripping hopefully at this series then it’s vanished with the appearance of the ninja.
Aside from that though, there’s still a lot to like about this volume. It starts with Yorick meeting a woman in a church before finally succumbing to his urges and sleeping with her.
After that we get the return of Hero as well as a decent bit of exposition on what happened to her after the plague hit, how she got involved with the amazons and what she’s been doing since escaping from prison. This is probably the most enjoyable part of this volume and explains a lot about Hero’s character and the hardships she’s gone through in her life.
We also get to see the return of Victoria, in the form of hallucinations that Hero suffers. Hero is cured of Victoria’s brain washing but Victoria does her best to lead Hero back onto the path of the amazons. This makes for some interesting scenes and some of the strongest story the series has had in a while.
The ninja stuff is a little weak and might test your will if you’re already losing faith in the series. In fairness though, while it’s easily the weakest inclusion in the series so far it’s handled as well as you could hope, it still sticks out like a sore thumb though.
This volume has some of my favourite moments in the series so far but also some of my least favourites. If you’re not too fussed about the series’ continual move away from reality you’ll have a blast with this book, but if that move bothers you, this is probably the volume where you’re probably going to struggle the most.
