Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie

Scrape your Knuckles, Catch some Tails
Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie
"You might know everything I'm going to do, but that's not going to help you 'cause I know everything you're going to do! Strange isn't it?"

Sonic the Movie, is actually a compilation of two episodes released separately on video in Japan. OVA’s (Original video animations) are fairly common in Japan, episodes are released periodically on VHS (now DVD), in a way similar to how the comic book market works. The tradition is not so popular outside of Japan (I can only remember it happening once in the UK, with the release of the Guyver) so for the western release the two episodes were combined into one hour long animation.
The video covers for the two original Japanese releases

The movie is a little marmite, you’re gonna either love it or hate it. For my money though, it’s one of the most enjoyable things ever to bear the Sonic name.

The film is an original take on the Sonic universe, relocating the series to the planet Freedom and introducing new characters The President, his daughter Sara and Old Man Owl who steals the show.
Watching the movie as a kid it was the most exciting thing in the world as it was the first time that Sonic, Tails and Knuckles were on screen together as well as the first to feature the in-game design of Dr Robotnik. Most importantly however, it was the first (and to this day, still the only) animation to feature Metal Sonic.
Robotnik & Hyper Metal Sonic

The animation is very obviously Japanese in style and makes use of a lot of the limited animation associated with Anime, though there are several moments of very impressive, full animation.
The world takes a lot of visual cues from the game universe which is a treat for fans, especially as the three American series were so far removed from the style of the games. The characters too retain their game designs, gone is Sonic’s Mohawk and Robotnik retains his design from the original game. The only character who looks any different is Kunckles who for some reason is given a hat. But who cares about the hat. The hat is awesome. Long live the hat.
oooooh yeeeeeeaaaaahhhh!!!!!

There are lots of epic moments, the battles with Metal Robotnik and Hyper Metal Sonic are awesome and you can’t help but enjoy them, but there are also a lot of funny moments as well as a few moments that are oddly inappropriate for the target market. Metal Sonic looks up Sara’s skirt, Sonic gives Metal Robotnik the finger and there’s the infamous scene where tails grabs Sara’s breasts.

There are also a few great odd and cheesy moments that are good for a laugh. The famous “STRAAAANGE ISN’T IT?” quote and Sonic’s favourite clothes being the best of all.

The movie has its flaws. It’s very obviously two episodes stapled together, the break in the middle of the two episodes being very apparent. The characters all do glances to the camera, there’s a musical swell and the first episode very obviously reaches it’s conclusion before fading to black and opening on part two. This isn’t a major issue though, it doesn’t take you out of the movie or anything like that.
The main area of complaint is the voice acting. Definitely the most divisive aspect of the whole movie, you will definitely either love or hate them. Tails suffers from a permanent blocked nose and Sonic is given a weird voice the flits back and forth from American to an odd British accent.
I like them though, Sonic’s voice takes a little while to get used to but it grows on you and I find Tails’ voice adorable and really suited to the character.
The other voices are all great in my opinion, Knuckles suits him well and the new characters all have fitting actors and in my opinion, Robotnik’s voice may be one of the best he’s ever had.

Those are Sonic's favourite clothes so don't blame us if he gets mad at you...

I love Sonic the Movie and watch it at least once a year, usually on Sonic’s birthday. It’s a great mix of the serious and the silly and at less than an hour it’s all good stuff without any needless padding.
If you’re a Sonic fan it’s an odd little gem that really deserves a watch, the DVD is hard to find but you can see the whole thing on youtube.
